Our Approach
Our research-based approaches are overseen by an experienced mentor and taught to students in an individualized and personal manner.
Orton-Gillingham Approach
Orton-Gillingham (OG) practitioners design lessons and materials to work with students at the level they present by pacing instruction to their strengths and weaknesses. Students with dyslexia need to master the same basic knowledge about language and its relationship to our writing system as any who seek to become competent readers and writers. However, because of their dyslexia, they need more help than most people in sorting, recognizing, and organizing the raw materials of language for thinking and use. Language elements that non-dyslexic learners acquire easily must be taught directly and systematically.
Our practitioners are trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach and receive mentorship in the development of their skills.
Visualizing & Verbalizing ® for Language Comprehension & Thinking
This method develops a student’s ability to form concept imagery based on what they read or hear. In other words, they learn to make a mental movie when reading or listening. Students use their conceptual imagery to think about information, draw conclusions, and make inferences.
SMARTs Executive Functioning
This approach develops goal setting, cognitive flexibility, organizing
and prioritizing, memorizing, self-checking and monitoring – to help students learn first HOW to learn, and then apply those tools to their specific academic challenges. We use the SMARTs instructional strategies and tools to systematically build a student’s executive functioning and apply it to their academic life and personal goals.
Writing Revolution ®
â—‹ Coming soon
This is a systematic approach to improving writing that is based on the Hochmann Method of Writing.
The program is specifically designed to help low-income students, students with disabilities, and English Language Learners.
In addition to Writing Revolution ®, we augment our approach to writing with Bayhill High School’s writing approach developed over our years of working with students who struggle to write. This systematic and highly visual approach builds in the necessary executive functioning skills and scaffolding necessary for successful essay writing.
Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing (LiPS) ®
â—‹ Coming soon
This method develops auditory conceptualization - the ability to perceive the identity, number, and order of sound within words. Auditory conceptualization is often underdeveloped in students with dyslexia. Combining LiPS ® with Orton-Gillingham is a powerful approach for students with a more severe form of dyslexia.
